ABOUT THIS CONFERENCE
We will meet on 17 April in Lisboa to learn about international human resources policies in the world we live in today. How would you define that world? To some leading thinkers, the world we live in today is increasingly dangerous. An article in the New York Times calls it this way: "Threats to people’s future prospects come from complex, decentralized phenomena... including... Islamic extremism, failed states, global competition, global warming, nuclear proliferation, a skills-based economy, economic and social segmentation."
In the closing keynote session, the TALK SHOW open-forum idea exchange, we will discuss several aspects of the world we live in today, including: WHAT WE SHOULD EXPECT FROM OUR LEADERS...
This conference education course is advanced-level and features a very distinguished and experienced conference faculty who will present cutting-edge, practical information useful in your office the very next business day. This "idea exchange" conference will be highly interactive.

WORKING and COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY ACROSS CULTURES:
ALIGNING EXPATRIATE TRAINING WITH BUSINESS STRATEGY
Presented by
SHEIDA HODGE, President,
Hodge International Advisors (www.hodge-ia.com)
SESSION SYNOPSIS:
International assignments have changed dramatically since companies first introduced country briefings for expatriating employees and their families. Today, most existing cross-cultural training models and approaches fall short in providing the necessary in-depth knowledge and customized training that will help expatriates achieve assignment objectives. This session presents a new model of expatriate training and aims to create new ideas and strategies to meet the needs of today’s relocating employees and their families.
Example of Sheida's Practice:
Hodge International Advisors’ January 2007, Executive Cultural Coaching for a Thyssen Krupp relocating executive, demonstrated the efficacy of this model, where the training was specifically designed around achievement of measurable performance objectives. At the end of the two-day program we developed a detailed action plan that applied the deliverables from the training to the workplace. A detailed outline was developed which identified specific actions and strategies that would positively affect the work environment and on the job performance of the relocating employee.
ABOUT SHEIDA:
Sheida Hodge with over 25 years of business experience, is the president of Hodge International Advisors––a training, coaching, and consulting firm in Seattle––offering a full range of services geared toward helping executives succeed in global business. Ms. Hodge has authored a book: Global Smarts: the Art of Communicating and Deal Making Anywhere in the World ...published by John Wiley & Sons. She has an MBA and a BS degree in mathematics. Ms. Hodge’s recent clients include Bayer, Thyssen Krupp, The Gucci Group, Hugo Boss, European Relocation Associations, Booz Allen Hamilton, Colgate, Ralph Lauren and Honeywell. She has designed, developed, and led courses on international communication and negotiation skills at the University of Washington Global Executive MBA program, UCLA, University of California Irvine, and Thunderbird. She started her career with GE where she gained invaluable international experience traveling to Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East in support of GE’s international business development. More recently, she led Berlitz International’s Cultural Consulting Division as their Worldwide Managing Director. Ms. Hodge has been quoted as a leading expert in her field in such major publications such as The Wall Street Journal, the Chicago Tribune, the Orange County Register, CNBC, and CNN. She has also published numerous articles in several major trade publications.

HOW TO NAVIGATE YOUR WAY IN A VERY UN-FLAT WORLD... UNDERSTANDING THE RISE OF INDIA, CHINA, EASTERN EUROPE, BRASIL
Presented by
DEAN FOSTER, President of Dean Foster Associates, New York & Brussels
Synopsis:
There is no doubt that global economics has levelled the playing field around the world for many countries that previously did not participate in global growth.
However, interpreting the unfolding of events in the 21st century as occurring in a flattened world, as is the case with fashionable "flat-earth" thinking, overlooks the more critical challenge that societies face working in this new economic environment: navigating the more formidable cultural mountains encountered on the global terrain. This presentation will explore some of the key cultural mountains that need to be overcome for global success, and how cultural differences actually determine the roles that different countries play as they assume their place in the global economy.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER:

For over twenty years, Dean has played a major role in the development of intercultural training and the relationship between culture and globalization: formerly he was founder and Managing Director of Berlitz Cross-Cultural Worldwide, Vice President GMAC/Windham Intercultural, and founder of Cross-Cultural Consulting Associates, New York.

Dean is a Contributing Editor for Executive Travel Magazine, Contributing Editor for National Geographic Traveler writing the CultureWise monthly column, and he is Senior Contributing Editor for the International webpage of Monster.com.
